Underpinning everything we do at Microsoft is Search, its embedded in all of the new releases not to mention MOSS. The search engine of Office SharePoint Server 2007 has been enhanced significantly. It now offers consistent search features based on common paradigms. Search result relevance has been optimized, and new functions for finding individuals or skills have been added. Data in LOB applications can now be indexed and searched. The usability and scope of the search functionality has been further improved.

Top Features at A Glance:

  • Define the relevance of search results
  • Integration with business applications
  • Seamless search engine integration with Exchange 2007 and SharePoint 2007
  • People Search: Search by employee or expertise – can be extended by the ‘Knowledge Network’
  • Include back-end systems (databases ERP’s,…) in teh search scope (by using the ‘Business Data Catalog’)
  • Enterprise scalability
  • Contextual relevance
  • Comprehensive searches for personal and business data

Veggies, Vegans, Carnivores the lot – By offering suites that include tailored sets of applications and features, the 2007 Microsoft Office system helps address the unique needs of an organization and its employees- whatever their appetite might be for our technology. The volume-licensing suites, Office Standard 2007, Office Professional Plus 2007, and Office Enterprise 2007, all boast features and applications that support information rights management, integrated content management, and customized electronic forms – with varying degrees of integration. In addition, the variations in included applications allow organizations to license a software suite with the specific tools users need to perform key tasks and i hope my previous posts have clarified what you get with what and more importantly what you don’t!

While Office Standard 2007 enables users to participate in document-based processes and simple collaboration, Office Professional Plus 2007 and Office Enterprise 2007 in conjunction with Office SharePoint Server and other Office Servers provide advanced functionality that supports sophisticated collaboration and the ability to define and initiate business processes. The decision about which suite or suites are best suited to a particular organization should be based on an understanding of the business needs and collaborative style of the organization and its employees, as well as on the applications and functionality available to meet those needs. The office system 2003 was a big step forward but the integration and added functionality within this release is streets ahead. I’m really excited about some of the stuff you acheive OOTB and look forward to working with organisations over the coming years to help them get the most from it!

Although it’s not my area of specialism this really is a big deal and hence i am writing this post. I work really closely with the Vista guys in the UK and with Office 2007 this really is a better ‘together’ story

Yesterday we announced the Release to Manufacturing of Windows Vista.  This is a significant milestone for Microsoft and our partners, and one we are very excited about.

Windows Vista has achieved a number of remarkable firsts, a very small sampling of which includes:

·         This is the first time we’ve supported a broad array of product skus to help address different customer segments – and they’re all supported using a single product image. The same DVD can be used to install any of the product images.

·         It is truly a worldwide release. For the first time we released Windows simultaneously in 5 languages! In fact, French, Spanish, and Japanese signed off before English, which is also an amazing first. 18 languages will be available at the general launch in January. We will ship 32 language editions within 100 days of US English RTM. And when we’re done, Windows Vista will be available in over 100 languages.

·         Windows Vista supports more hardware than ever. Hundreds of OEMs and thousands of systems builders will pre-install Windows Vista, which will have more than 50% more device drivers inbox at RTM than Windows XP had, plus thousands more will be on Windows Update before general availability.

·         Windows Vista is the most tested release ever. This is the first Microsoft product that has incorporated the Secure Development Lifecycle from the beginning, and has employed stringent quality gates for each release milestone.

·         We’ve had millions of downloads of the pre-release versions, and there are already over 60,000 machines at Microsoft running Windows Vista—more than any prior Windows release at RTM.

·         This is the first time that customers will be able to deploy worldwide on diverse hardware all with a single IT-managed image. And it’s the first time that this image can be serviced offline.

·         And because of the great improvements in deployment tools, it’s the first time that leading OEMs will be able to drive their mission-critical manufacturing process for building and configuring machines using only inbox tools. Windows Vista deploys Windows Vista!

·         Windows Vista is the fastest installing version of Windows when installing on then current generation hardware. Install times of Windows Vista on normal desktop class hardware regularly clock in at between 15 and 20 minutes.

We’ve received very positive reviews in the press. Here’s what they’re saying:

·         The long wait for Microsoft’s next operating system, Windows Vista, is almost over. Dramatically redesigned, the new OS features tighter security, slicker visuals and friendlier—one might be tempted to say Mac-like—applications for managing photos, movies and music. –Wilson Rothman, TIME

·         If all Windows users were running Vista, the world would be a much safer place. –Larry Seltzer/eWEEK

·         As to Microsoft (Windows) Vista, bravo. … It brilliantly and intuitively lets one use a PC with extreme efficiency and/or enjoyment. –James Coates/Chicago Tribune

·         One of Vista’s biggest promises and one of the best inducements to want it now – is to help you regain the upper hand in the battle against information overload. –John Clyman/PC Magazine

·         With Vista, Microsoft has made significant investments in connecting people to information so they could work in smarter ways, which is essential for the enterprise. –Peter Galli and David Morgenstern/eWEEK

·         There are a lot of things in Vista for the enterprise that are compelling. You have security, management, robustness, fewer reboots…. I think a lot of people will refresh their desktops, servers and applications. –Peter O’Kelly, an analyst with Burton Group in Network World

Office 2007 products will be available at retail early in 2007, so you’ll be able to get your hands on them soon. Business customers will be able to get Office 2007 through the volume licensing program before the end of the year.

If you’re running the Beta 2 Technical Refresh, the good news is that you can keep using that build for quite some time: the client build expires on March 31, 2007, and the server products expire on May 15, 2007

A quick an easy synopsis for you -digest and enjoy! If you want to discuss this in more detail, my colleague Brian Barnes will gladly lead any retail based discussions.

1: Instant Search!

It’s Fast and Easy! This feature that is available from almost anywhere in Windows Vista, enables you to type a filename, a property, or even just text contained within a file, and it returns pinpointed results!

2: Fast boot and resume!
Power on and off your computer in 2-3 seconds, enabling you a consumer electronics like experience.

3: Performance Centre – Performance Diagnosis!
Windows Vista has built in performance diagnostics which can detect and self correct many performance issues. From the diagnostics centre you can visibly see what could be causing glitch’s in media playback, slow application start-up, slow boot up and network problems.

4: Parental Controls!
Allows parents greater peace of mind and an increased level of confidence in their ability to control what content their children can view when they use a computer. The Parental Control panel helps parents to set time parameters for PC usage, control which websites can be viewed and read detailed reports about their children’s use of applications.

5: Photo Gallery!
A great way to show photos to your friends and family. Easily edit and touch-up your photos with built in red eye reduction, auto contrast, smart cropping and rotation tools.

6: Aero Glass!
A professional, attractive, graphically rich desktop experience that takes advantage of contemporary hardware, featuring more animation and translucent glass on the Start menu, window borders, and other critical Windows UI components.

7: Backup & Restore!
The new backup and restore control panel makes it fast and easy to determine the backup status of your pc and to take action, as needed, to protect you against data loss.

8: Meeting Space!
Ideal for those situations where a projector is not available! Whether you are making a Microsoft Office PowerPoint presentation or revising a spreadsheet, Windows Meeting Space enables face-to-face collaboration by as few as two or as many as ten people. Quick, easy and secure connections make sharing and viewing documents easier than ever.

9: Sidebar!
Unleashes personal productivity by enabling instant access to “gadgets,” a nearly endless variety of engaging, customisable mini applications, which provide information at a glance and easy access to frequent tasks.

10: Windows SuperFetch!
Gives you control of your PC much quicker! SuperFetch tracks which applications are used most often and preloads them into your computer’s memory, giving you access to your applications in record time. It is also clever enough to differentiate between which applications you’re most likely to use on the weekend or during the week, so the computer is ready with the applications that are most likely to be needed at any given time!

Ultimately SharePoint Portal would generally be the main enterprise platform for document management and collaboration because of its tight integration, deeply embedded functionality and familiar and common user interface as part of the core Office System. Groove’s agility is its real differentiator, its replication and synchronization capability into SharePoint ensures it is a complimentary product rather than a challenger. By agility I would reference the information supplied below, specifically its ‘extranet’ or third party comprehensiveness, offline capability meaning it’s great for a mobile workforce and finally its ability to integrate back into SharePoint and the rest of the office system to enhance team collaboration.

Working in Groove 2007 workspaces saves time and increases individual when mobile or outside the firewall thus enhancing team productivity and what’s more – You stay in synch automatically, so you spend less time coordinating with each other and more time on the job in hand!

Administrator documentation for Windows SharePoint Services v3 Beta 2 :

An internal email from Chris Capposela (head of IW) to field sales confirms that 2007 will get added to the price list in November.  This is excellent news and a strong indicator of our confidence.  That said, usual caveats apply about how product performance and quality will ultimately dictate availability.

Our development schedule remains on track to deliver the 2007 Microsoft Office system by the end of 2006, with broad general availability in early 2007.  Feedback on quality and performance will determine the exact dates.

Picture Perfect

September 7, 2006

I’m loving this specific element of functionality in office 2007, mainly because i believe so deeply in the value of graphics. I’m an impacient person, in a world of information overload a picture paints a thousand words and make a page full of text that much more engaging. One of our goals for the Office 2007 user interface was to make it easier to create beautiful output and this does just that in much less time!

In many circumstances, you are judged by the quality of the output you create. And software that helps you create beautiful output makes you look smart and feel good – i sometimes think i need all the help i can get 🙂

Many of the features of the new UI, including the Ribbon, galleries, and Live Preview, were designed together to create an environment in which you can discover and easily use the power of Office’s formatting capabilities. Add to this the new Office 2007 graphics engine, and suddenly in a few clicks, you can create beautiful-looking output without learning to be a Photoshop expert.

Every kind of object in Office 2007 (table, chart, picture, drawing, etc.) has an overall gallery on its first contextual tab which allows you to set the overall style for the object.

Every object has a gallery of overall styles available

Although you can continue tweaking and formatting to get highly customized results, the default choices are designed to be beautiful right out-of-the-box; with one click you can achieve graphics designer-quality results meaning you can look like you know what your doing when really you’ve got the right tools!!!!!!!
